There are so many reasons why you should choose a new career after your divorce, these are just a few of the most common:
- Your husband didn’t allow you work.
- You need a higher paying salary to take care of your home and children.
- You need the independence.
- You need a career that makes you happy.
- You need to take a step away from the people in your job (perhaps you worked with people who knew your husband or you worked with your husband).
- You didn’t like your old job anyway.
Whatever the reason, now is the perfect time to take stock of what you want from a career and create a plan to get the career you want to enable you to bounce back, become reinvented and ready to create a happier life.
Some of you may not have looked for a new job for quite a while and might feel a little intimidated at the prospect of looking for new opportunities, some of you may still feel that a woman’s place is not at work but let me tell you something; things have changed. This is the 21st Century and it’s a woman’s world.
Advances in technology and the internet have opened up a whole range of new possibilities including flexible working and working from home, allowing you a greater choice over what you want to do and more flexibility when it comes to working around your children.
The first step to choosing your new career is to make a list. Write down the following:
- What skills do you have? – Dig deep. A polite telephone manner and the ability to use a computer can be enough.
- What hours can you work? – Think about school drop offs and pick up’s, spending time with friends and family and leaving some time for yourself.
- Do you want to start a new business? – Do you have an invention or a business idea that you’re passionate about?
- What’s your dream job? – The thing you’ve always dreamt of doing and are most passionate about.
Once you have your list you’ll have a clear idea of whether your dream job is attainable based on the hours you’re available to work and the skills that you have. If you don’t have the skills needed, learn them. You can take online or part-time courses to help you or look for volunteer work.
If you can only work a few hours a day around your children consider flexible working or childcare. As of this year, the government reviewed UK working regulations and increased the entitlement for flexible working. Everyone now has the right to request flexible working from their employer, especially parents.
Alternatively, have you thought about working from home? A lot of employers have made the transition to off-site workers to increase productivity and lower overheads.
You could also consider working for yourself as a freelancer, such as a Virtual Assistant.
Virtual Assistants are growing in numbers. You only need a computer, internet connection and a telephone, along with a professional, friendly manner to get you started. You can choose what hours and which clients you work with and set your own hourly rates. There are even sites where you can source new customers such as PeoplePerHour, Elance and Fiverr.
If you’d like to start your own business, don’t feel intimidated by paperwork. There’s lots of support online to help get you off to a good start or you can find a local start-up support group that will help you work through the steps of getting your business off the ground.
If you crave the buzz from working in an office or shop, brush up on your interview skills and re-write your CV. Even if you haven’t worked for a while, polish off your CV to include any extra skills you have, any volunteer work you’ve done and to clearly express why you want the job.
There are so many opportunities out there. You just need to look for them and don’t give up at the first rejection. Take a deep breath, believe in yourself and be prepared to work hard.
